How to Spot a Genuine UK Used Phone Before You Buy
UK used phones are genuinely good value — but only if the phone is actually what the seller says it is. Here's the checklist we use ourselves before any UK used phone goes on our shelf, so you know exactly what to check wherever you're buying from.
1. Check the IMEI
Every phone has a unique IMEI number, found by dialing *#06# or in Settings → About Phone. Compare it to the number printed on the box, and ask the seller to let you check it against a blacklist checker before you pay. A blacklisted or reported phone will eventually get locked by the network, no matter how good it looks.
2. Check battery health
On iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. On Samsung/Android: Settings → Battery → Battery Info (or use a diagnostic app). Anything above 85% is solid for a UK used phone. Below 80% isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, but the price should reflect it — and you should budget for a battery replacement sooner.
3. Test the screen properly
- Open a plain white image or blank note full-screen and look for discoloration, dead pixels, or burn-in
- Check touch response across all corners of the screen, not just the middle
- Look at the screen from an angle in bright light — cracks under a screen protector can be hard to see head-on
4. Test cameras and speakers
Take a few photos with both front and back cameras and zoom in to check focus and clarity. Play a video with sound to check both speakers and the microphone. Test the charging port with the actual cable you'll be using — not just the seller's.
5. Ask about the grading
Reputable UK used sellers grade their stock (commonly Grade A, B, or C) based on cosmetic condition and function. Ask what grade the phone is and what that specific grade means at that shop — grading standards aren't universal, so a "Grade A" claim is only useful if you know what it's being measured against.
6. Get the warranty in writing
Even an informal shop warranty is worth having documented — WhatsApp confirmation of the terms is fine, but get it before you pay, not after.
